Introduction: There is evidence on the negative effect of the use of information and communication technologies on students, however, little is known about physio-ergonomic problems secondary to their use. Objective: To identify the technological-educational factors associated with the report of 4 physio-ergonomic problems in medical students. Methods: Cross-sectional study in medical students from 11 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. A questionnaire was used whose variables were socio-educational and technological characteristics, as well as physio-ergonomic problems (neck pain, back pain, dry/red eye and headache). Results: Of 11 587 students, 14.5% reported presenting 4 physio-ergonomic problems. Most reported neck pain (50%), back pain (50.5%), and headache (53.7%). Women (PR= 1.06), who studied a previous degree (PR= 1.19), who belonged to all years of studies (PR= 1.12-1.20), who had greater use of the Internet, had a higher frequency (in hours) of presenting these physio-ergonomic problems (PR= 1.01) and those who accessed Twitter during school hours (PR= 1.30). They decreased the frequency of presenting these problems, being younger in years (PR= 0.99), coming from a private university (PR= 0.81), and who belonged to any extracurricular group (PR= 0.67-0.93). Conclusions: The technological-educational factors associated with the report of 4 physio-ergonomic problems in medical students were being a woman, having a previous degree, belonging to all the years of study, hours of Internet use and access to Twitter during classes.

The use of information sources is important in the training of the medical student; however, in Latin America a decrease in its use has been reported and problems have been identified in its knowledge. The objective of the study was to determine the factors associated with the use of information sources in medical students at a university in Tacna, Peru. An observational, analytical and cross-sectional study was carried out in students of a private university, using a stratified random sampling. A virtual self-applied instrument was used, which inquired into the socio-educational characteristics, the frequency of use/training of the information sources and the characteristics of scientific research. The result of the study indicated greater use of information sources, associated with the independent variables, through multiple regression models. Out of 274 students, 32.1% frequently used information sources. The most used were: Google Scholar (36.5%) and SciELO (25.2%); in contrast, most students are unaware of the sources: HINARI (56.2%) and EMBASE (55.5%). In conclusion, performing in a higher academic year and having more perception of the skills in the search for scientific information are the factors associated with greater use of information sources.

Introduction: Medical rest is a legal figure granted to rest in the presence of an incapacitating injury, without depriving the worker of receiving the incomes from work. Objective: To characterize the days of medical rest according to the type of diagnosis in patients treated at the social security in Trujillo, Peru. Material and Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study involving secondary data, and using the basis of medical breaks (measured in days) due to temporary incapacity from 2009 to 2015 in a social security hospital in northern Peru. Characterization was obtained according to the type of pathology, and analytical statistics was performed using linear regression. Results: Of the 145077 rest days granted, false labor was the most frequent condition. However, common accidents such as external malleolus fracture, radius fracture, and intervertebral disc disorder had more days of rest, being above average for other disabilities. On the other hand, those that generated fewer days of rest were diarrhea, pharyngitis and dehydration, being below average for other pathologies. In terms of sex, in general, men were granted more medical rest. All this was statistically significant. Conclusions: There are marked differences in the allocation of days of rest according to the characteristics of the persons to whom they were given; this should be evaluated in further studies to find standard values(AU)

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: There are individuals who still refuse to wear seat belts, despite its effectiveness in reducing morbidity and mortality in road traffic accidents. We aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors according to the use of seat belts among public transport drivers in Tacna, Peru. METHODOLOGY: This analytical transversal study was carried out among public transport drivers (buses and taxis) in a Peruvian city. Questionnaires were used to evaluate the general and occupational characteristics and the use of seat belts (observed). Descriptive statistics and risk factors were obtained, these latter through generalized linear models. RESULTS: Of the 460 drivers, 77% used their seat belts, with a difference in use depending on the type of public transport (p<0.001). In the multivariate model, the risk of not using the belt was associated with the following: older age (p<0.001), having complete studies (p<0.001), a higher level/category of driving license (3 categories had p<0.001), having a higher number of previous road traffic accidents (p = 0.011), and received medical attention in that accident (p<0.001), those who reported using a cell phone while driving (p = 0.005), if the co-driver's belt had 3 anchorage points (p<0.001), and working for > 5 hours that day (p = 0.002). However, male drivers and those who had their belt with 3 anchorage points had greater use (both p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: One in five drivers did not use a seat belt, and important characteristics of those who did not comply with this traffic law were evaluated to generate control and intervention measures.

RESUMO

Objectives: To determine the factors associated with self-medication with drugs related to COVID-19 in health sciences students. Materials and methods: Observational, analytical, cross-sectional study in students of the health sciences of Tacna-Peru. Through a virtual survey, socio-educational variables, practices, self-medication characteristics and exposure to COVID-19 were recognized. The result was self-medication in the last 3 months with at least 1 in 14 drugs. The prevalence ratios were calculated using generalized linear models. Results: Of the 718 students, 51.3% live on self-medication. 62.2% self-medicated because they presented the highest number of respiratory symptoms and the drugs used more antipyretics, analgesics and corticosteroids. Students with a sentimental partner (PR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.16-1.53), from a private university (PR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.10- 1.69), that the priests in his family have a picnic a few times (PR: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.58-3.47) and in which a program sized for COVID-19 (PR : 1.47, 95% CI: 1.14-1.89). Conclusion: We found a high prevalence of self-medication. Most of them have self-medication that has a sentimental partner, from a private university, that their priests or relatives are on selfpicnic and that they have a size problem due to COVID-19, which they could use to promote the rational use of medications.

Abstract Introduction: Homeopathy is a widely used therapy in different parts of the world. However, its effectiveness has not been scientifically proven. Objective: To assess the factors associated with the perception of homeopathy scientific validity in Peruvian general practice (GP) physicians. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional analytical study. A group of GP physicians who attended training and career guidance courses on medical specialties and residencies offered by Colegio Médico del Perú (Medical Association of Peru) in 2017 were asked to complete a self-administered survey. The main study variable was evaluated using the following question: Do you consider that homeopathy effectiveness has been scientifically proven? Prevalence ratios (PR) and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR), as well as their 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were calculated to assess the factors associated with considering homeopathy effectiveness as scientifically proven. Results: 285 GP physicians completed the survey (55.1% were women; median age: 28 years); 67.4% reported having heard about homeopathy, and out of these, 22.5% considered that homeopathy effectiveness was scientifically proven. Perceiving this type of therapy as scientifically valid was more frequent in women (aPR:1.80, 95%CI:1.03-3.16) and less frequent in those who had published at least one scientific paper (aPR:0.23, 95%CI:0.06-0.88). Conclusions: Almost a quarter of the physicians who had heard about homeopathy considered that this therapy had been scientifically proven. This might be caused by gaps in their medical training regarding alternative and complementary medicine therapies, and the influence that non-formal education has on decision-making.

Introduction: Hepatitis B is a global health problem; Health science students should be fully aware of this pathology, not only as part of their learning, but because they are exposed to occupational accidents and increased risk of transmission in practice. The aim of the study was to assess the level of knowledge about Hepatitis B in health science students and to determine the factors associated with this level of knowledge. Methodology: Cross-sectional, analytical study; performed in peruvian health sciences faculty. Knowledge was evaluated with a questionnaire of 20 questions about Hepatitis B infection. Likewise, socio-educational and preventive data were collected from students about hepatitis B. The analytical variable was to have the better knowledge (upper tertile). Prevalence ratios were found in the statistical program Stata. Results: Of the 205 students to medicine, dentistry and medical technology, 57 percent were women, predominantly in the first year (39 percent). The mean of the score was 12 points (interquartile range: 10-13), of 20 possible points. We found that 82 percent reported incomplete vaccination. The students in the clinical areas were more likely to obtain a satisfactory evaluation. (PR: 1.84, 95 percent CI: 1.06-3.18). Conclusions: Most students had an inadequate level of knowledge about Hepatitis B, being the clinical sciences students who did better results. For this reason, we suggest that the authorities take appropriate measures to correct this situation, as a population at high risk of infection(AU)

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The heart rate (HR) is useful for the monitoring of patients, but almost no studies have been found which describe their variations according to different geographic locales and altitudes using centiles in children and adults. METHODOLOGY: Descriptive, cross-sectional study of secondary data. Measurements were taken with a calibrated pulse oximeter; our participants resided in host cities for more than 2 months and underwent clinical evaluations by physicians. The results were categorized according to their age group and the altitude of residence using centile charts. RESULTS: Our sample size consisted of 6,289 subjects across different villages in Peru. Using Pearson correlation between HR and altitude, it was found in the group of patients aged 1-5 years, a coefficient of -0.118 (p value = 0.012), in the group of patients aged 6-17, 0.047 (p value = 0.025), in the group of patients aged 18-50, -0.044 (p value = 0.041) and for the group of patients aged 51-80, 0.042 (p value = 0.256). In the groups of 1-5, 6-17 and 18-50 years of age, the variations were negligible but statistically significant due to our large sample size. When all of the data was evaluated, HR values were also found to have negligible variations according to the residence altitude, with a Pearson coefficient of -0.033 (p value = 0.009). Centiles charts were used to describe the distribution of HR for different age groups by altitude of residence. CONCLUSION: There are minimal variations of the HR according to the altitude of residence in all age groups.

Introduction: In order to improve learning, teachers so often carry out some type of abuse, which means a high frequency of mistreatment among medical students. However, its determinants have not been explored in an extensive student population. Objective: To determine the socio-educational factors associated with the perception of abuse among Peruvian medical students. Methods: Cross-sectional, analytical, multi-center study in more than one thousand students throughout Peru. A validated survey was used for student abuse, seeking association with socio-educational variables. A snowball sampling was carried out; statistical associations were found using generalized linear models. Results: Women suffered less physical abuse (adjusted prevalence ratio [APR]: 0.86), but more sexual abuse (APR: 1.54). Those from private universities had lower physical abuse (APR: 0.80). Homosexuals had more psychological, academic and sexual abuse (APR: 1.81, 1.78 and 2.07 respectively). Bisexuals had more sexual abuse (APR: 1.50). Those who were overweight/obese suffered more psychological abuse (APR: 1.21). The higher amount of years in hospitals, the more cases of psychological and sexual abuse (APR: 1.10 and 1.09, respectively). Those who did extra shifts and were medical interns had greater physical (APR: 1.22 and 1.40, respectively) and academic (APR: 1.21 and 1.46, respectively) abuse. Those satisfied with the major had less frequent of the four types of abuse. Conclusions: Some students were found to be more mistreated, measures must be taken for this to be characterized, intervened and reduced, since it could have consequences on the students, their performance and may have repercussions until he is a professional(AU)

Introduction: Medical students are interested in and consider investigation to be very important since the undergraduate period. Its practice demands specific training that includes various aspects for its development. Objective: To determine the perception by Peruvian medical students and the factors associated with the possibility of them working as medical scholars. Methods: Cross-sectional analytical study of secondary data collected through a virtual survey. The perception of the scholar physicians was obtained through a previously validated test. Results: Out of the 795 students, 57 percent were female and 22 years were of average age. Some facts increase the frequency of intention to be a medical scholar after ten years of graduation: being males (p: 0.012), their university being in the mountains (p: 0.003), in the jungle (p<0.001), or being a public one (P: 0.015), having carried out outreach investigation (p <0.001), having attended a scientific conference as authors (p: 0.019), stating that they would present a thesis for graduation --even though their university has other options-- (p<0.001), and the possibility to become an epidemiologist (p:0.027) or a professor (p<0.001) after ten years of graduation. Nevertheless, having made a presentation which was not a paper (p: 0,039) or manifested that they want to be a medical practitioner after ten years of graduation (p <0.001) decreased the frequency of wanting to be a medical scholar. Conclusions: Some characteristics exist in the students that could become scholars, which may serve for institutions to promote them among the students themselves(AU)
